This is something everyone needs to do sometime in their life.
Monkey Mia is a very small city located up the coast of Western Australia. It is very isolated and there honestly isn't much going on for the city... except that it is one of the only places in the world where dolphins come right up to the shore to be fed.. everyday. Except for 4 times in the last 5 years, dolphins have come to the shores of Monkey Mia. And they were there the morning we went! Everyday starting at 7:30, the dolphins are fed 3 times a day until 12pm. They used to be fed all day everyday but researchers learned this was harmful to the calves since the mom's weren't taking them to deeper water to feed. There is a very strict "no touch" policy since we could pass on germs, diseases, etc. on to the dolphins but a select few are allowed to feed them fish. Nic and I both were picked to feed Nickie, the most visited dolphin of MM. She brought there by her mom when she was a calf and has been coming back ever since, 33 years now.
This was an incredible experience. I was absolutely blown away. It's a different feeling seeing dolphins in the wild than at Sea World. I understand that they only come to get fed and that they actually want nothing to do with us but it was still so cool to see them come so close to the shore. Even throughout the day you can see them swimming around. The calves are super cute when the moms are being fed because they get bored and start doing tricks and show off for the crowd.
